Independent Diplomat (ID), the world’s first diplomatic advisory group, is seeking an experienced and creative diplomat to lead its work on climate change and natural resource issues, in particular its work in support of the Government of the Republic of the Marshall Islands (RMI) and its leadership of the “High Ambition Coalition” (HAC), which played a central role in securing many of the most ambitious elements of the Paris Agreement on climate change.

Building on the success of ID’s work in the lead up to, and during the 2015 Climate Change Conference in Paris (“COP21”), the successful candidate will have a unique and exciting opportunity to work with RMI and the HAC to help shape the future of climate diplomacy, in particular to accelerate the implementation of the Paris Agreement and seek the most urgent and ambitious global response to the climate challenge.

In working with RMI and its fellow island states, the position offers an exciting opportunity to work with those most affected by climate change to have their voices heard in various diplomatic forums, including but not limited to the UNFCCC negotiations.

The successful candidate will have at least ten years’ diplomatic experience (in government or other international institutions), and will need to demonstrate the ability to work quickly, creatively and autonomously, as well as a commitment to ID’s values of inclusion and justice in diplomacy.  She or he will lead a small, well-established global team to formulate and implement diplomatic strategies that incorporate the three pillars of modern diplomacy: political strategy, international law and public advocacy.  The role will require frequent international travel.

The Director, Climate Change & Natural Resources will also work as an integral part of ID’s global team, which currently has locations in New York, London and Brussels.  The Director will work closely with all staff to develop and implement strategies to assist all of ID’s clients to achieve their diplomatic objectives.  Working with ID’s Media team, the Director will help to create and implement public diplomacy strategies and use social media tools in support of ID’s clients.

Working with the Executive Director, Chief Operations Officer, Director of Development and External Relations, London Director and other senior staff, the Director will also: (a) identify prospective ID clients (states and organizations that would benefit from ID’s diplomatic assistance in pursuit of its core mission); (b) develop and implement proposals for engaging prospective clients; and (c) help to secure funding for ID’s work from supportive governments, foundations and other grant-giving institutions.
