Independent Diplomat (ID) is looking for 3 volunteers to support its summer fundraising drive as ‘Fundraising Assistants’. The position is available as soon as possible, ideally for a period of three months.
ID was founded in 2004 as the world’s first diplomatic advisory group by Carne Ross. Over ten years later, ID remains the only non-profit organization that provides high-quality, confidential diplomatic advice and assistance to democratic governments and political groups that are marginalised or unable to participate effectively in the diplomatic processes that most affect them. ID’s work in human rights, transitional justice, and conflict prevention continues to address this diplomatic deficit.
This position would be ideal for an individual looking to gain relevant experience in fundraising on behalf of a unique organisation dedicated to helping marginalised peoples access the closed world of diplomacy. Successful candidates will be self-motivated, passionate about international affairs, and able to quickly synthesize complex information from a variety of sources.
As this position is unpaid it may be most suitable for university students who will be staying in London during the summer break. We are flexible as to the start date of the position, in order to work around final hand-in dates.
During the position you will receive training in non-profit fundraising, from large-scale grant finding to small boutique foundation research. After the end of the three-month period, ID would be happy to provide references for the quality of your work whilst with the organisation.
Required skills and experience
Previous office experience (either paid work or internships) is a plus, as is the willingness and flexibility to fit in with a small and busy team. Fluency in English, excellent writing skills, strong IT and internet research skills, strong social media skills, and a detail-oriented approach to work are essential; fluency in other languages, specifically German, French, or Scandinavian languages would be an advantage. Experience with website design/editing, HTML, graphic design or video editing would be helpful.
Above all, candidates should exhibit an enthusiasm for international relations in general and the mission of Independent Diplomat in particular.
Please send (i) a CV (maximum two pages); (ii) a separate cover letter (maximum one page); to: london3(at)independentdiplomat.org. Please include the words ‘London Fundraising Assistant – Summer 2017’ in the email subject line.
Applications close at 5:00pm (BST) on Friday April 21st, however we will monitor applications on a rolling basis and may appoint positions before the end of this period.
The cover letter should:
- explain the reasons for your interest in a volunteer Fundraising Assistant position with ID;
- demonstrate your suitability for the role; and
- indicate your availability in terms of length of the internship and whether you are available full-time or part-time.
The CV should include the names and contact details of two references, ideally an academic reference and a reference of a current or recent employer.
Due to a large expected number of applicants, we regret that we are unable to confirm receipt of applications, provide feedback to unsuccessful candidates. Short interviews will take place over Skype.
