Why it Matters: A Syrian civil society group has installed a solar electric system in one of the largest hospitals in Idlib, Syria, capable of powering its intensive care unit, operating rooms and emergency departments for 24 hours. The Syrian government has systematically targeted hospitals in the 7-year war, leaving entire populations without access to medical care. The Syria Solar Initiative is addressing this problem by increasing hospitals’ resilience in the face of power cuts, reducing dependence on resources often controlled by warlords. The group hopes to get five other medical facilities in northern Syria running like this by the end of spring 2018.
