Independent Diplomat (ID) is seeking three paid interns to work remotely (for at least three days per week) on its Climate and/or Rohingya projects until at least mid-February 2020.

ID is a unique non‐profit venture in the world of international relations, diplomacy and conflict prevention. Staffed by former diplomats, international lawyers and experts in international relations, ID offers independent and confidential advice and assistance on diplomatic technique and strategy to governments, international institutions, non‐governmental organizations and political groups. ID currently has offices in New York, Brussels, Geneva and the UK with staff also based in Norway.

The roles will form a critical part of our joint climate and Rohingya teams, working under the leadership of a single director and alongside a small but dynamic group of staff.

Our Climate project supports the Government of the Republic of the Marshall Islands on their climate diplomacy, including their leadership of the High Ambition Coalition and negotiations under the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change and other climate-related fora/negotiations, including in the International Maritime Organization specifically.

Our Rohingya project provides diplomatic support to a number of Rohingya leaders and groups covering the diaspora, as well as political activists inside Myanmar/Burma, and representatives from the refugee camps in Bangladesh.

One intern will be particularly focused on providing media and social media support for both projects, and the other interns will be largely focussed on providing research and administrative support across one or both projects. However, all roles will involve widespread exposure across the spectrum of our work.

When applying candidates should specifically identify which of the roles they are interested in and demonstrate their particular suitability for that role.

Stipends Available.  We encourage applicants of diverse backgrounds and with a broad range of previous work experiences to apply. Independent Diplomat is not in a position to provide immigration support or visa sponsorship.  Independent Diplomat cannot offer any promise or guarantee of future employment or extended internships with the organization.

Qualifications

Successful applicants will demonstrate a strong interest in international affairs, as well as the mission of Independent Diplomat more broadly and ideally have relevant knowledge or experience relevant to Myanmar/Burma and the Rohingya or on climate diplomacy. Those interested in the media / social media role should also have familiarity and ideally experience in doing similar work.
