Why it Matters: Justice in Sri Lanka
Recent statements by President Sirisena indicate that the government of Sri Lanka may be reneging on its commitment to include international judges in the criminal justice mechanism agreed to in Human Rights Council Resolution 30/1. This doesn’t augur well for the government’s other pledges to address past grave crimes, stop human rights violations and institute constitutional reforms. Tomorrow, High Commissioner for Human Rights Zeid will arrive in Sri Lanka where he has an important opportunity to impress upon the government the need to fulfill its commitments.
